Heat, a real danger for your pets
Dogs and cats don't sweat like humans. They regulate their body temperature mainly by panting (for dogs) or by seeking cool places (for cats). Therefore, heatwaves are a real danger for them.
Signs of heatstroke in animals
Quickly recognize the warning symptoms:
- Excessive and rapid panting (dog)
- Excessive drooling
- Bright red or bluish gums and tongue
- Weakness, prostration, stumbling
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Seizures in severe cases
In case of heatstroke, act immediately and call your vet.
How to protect your dog this summer?
Hydration above all
- Make sure your dog always has access to fresh water
- Several water bowls placed around the house
- Add ice cubes to the water to keep it cool
- Offer special frozen treats for dogs
Cool housing and naps
- Constant access to a cool, shady spot
- Cooling gel mat: place it in the fridge for 30 min and your dog will love to lie on it
- Fan directed towards their resting area
- Light mister on their coat
Adapted outings
- Walks only early in the morning (before 8 am) or in the evening (after 8 pm)
- Check the asphalt temperature with your hand — if it's too hot for you, it's too hot for their paws
- Avoid cars: a parked car can reach 50°C in a few minutes

- Cool tiles, under furniture, in the bathroom
- Never force your cat to stay in the sun
- Brush them regularly to remove dead undercoat (better thermoregulation)
